Can DNS filtering block adult websites? (best use cases)

DNS filtering is a very effective method of blocking adult websites.

This process involves altering the Domain Name System (DNS) responses to prevent access to specific websites or categories of websites. By configuring DNS filters, internet service providers (ISPs), organizations, and individuals can restrict access to adult content at a higher level, like a router or a server.

In other words, you don't have to configure each device on the network.

This is particularly effective for blocking websites on larger networks like businesses, or homes with a lot of different devices.

The Best DNS Filtering Service

We recommend NordLayer for DNS filtering. They give you a ton of resources for a surprisingly low monthly price. It's great for homes and families, or places of business.

How DNS Filtering Works

Here's the two-part technical process:

  • When a user tries to access a website, their device sends a DNS request to translate the website's domain name (e.g., example.com) into an IP address.
  • DNS filtering intercepts these requests and either returns a null or an alternate IP address, effectively blocking the user's access to the requested website.

As I mentioned, DNS filtering can be implemented at various levels.

At the network level, ISPs can deploy DNS filtering on their servers to block adult websites for all their subscribers. Typically, this isn't done unless a domain gets blacklisted for spam or illegal activity.

Similarly, organizations can use DNS filtering on their networks to restrict access for their employees or students. This would be colleges or workplaces and it's not just limited to adult content. Social media sites, or other sites deemed to be harmful in other ways, perhaps as it relates to productivity will also be blocked depending on the organization's policy.

Additionally, individuals can configure DNS filtering on their home networks or devices to prevent access to adult content, which works the exact same way. Again, it's designed to be implemented at a higher level to cover multiple devices, so the exact configuration will depend on your router.

Methods of Implementation

There are different methods for implementing DNS filtering. One common approach is to use a DNS filtering service or software that maintains a database of categorized websites, including adult websites.

This could also be called a blacklist, like I mentioned earlier.

These services use predefined filters and rules to block access to specific categories, such as adult content, gambling, or malicious sites. By subscribing to or configuring these filters, all the websites on the blacklist will be blocked on their network.

Their blacklist becomes your blacklist.

The best ones are updated regularly with new data - new sites and categories, if an when they come up.

Weaknesses of DNS Filtering

DNS filtering has its weak spots, since there are certain methods that can be implemented to bypass it.

This depends heavily on the technical prowess of the users.

They can use virtual private networks (VPNs) or proxy servers to route their DNS requests through servers that are not subject to filtering. But for most casual users, DNS filtering provides a relatively simple and effective means of blocking adult content.

End users are less likely to try and "juke" the system, even with simple barriers put in place.

Using with Other Solutions

DNS filtering is just one aspect of content filtering and can be used in conjunction with other measures to ensure more comprehensive protection.

Especially when it comes to pornography, there are several things you can do to shore up the protective walls around your internet connection.

  • Parental control software
  • Category and keyword-based web filtering solutions (usually goes device by device)
  • Accountability software (reporting/buddy system)

Educating users about responsible internet usage, especially for children and vulnerable individuals, is another angle that should be considered. For accountability software, we recommend Covenant Eyes, which sets you up with an accountability partner using the "buddy system."

While this can be used in conjunction with DNS filtering, it's primarily used to mitigate pornography use and for just a few devices.

However, it's extremely effective when paired with a high-level blocker like a DNS filter.

Summary and Conclusion

In summary, DNS filtering can be used to block access to adult websites by altering DNS responses. It can be implemented at the network level by ISPs or organizations, or by individuals on their home networks, usually on their routers.

While DNS filtering isn't perfect, it's extremely effective, especially when used in combination with other content filtering measures to restrict access to adult content and create a safer, porn-free online experience.
