How to Block Porn Sites on a Router (cover all devices)

The best way to block porn sites on a router is with centralized software called DNS filtering. DNS filtering services have two main objectives:

  1. To block websites and certain content (based on URLs, keywords, and categories)
  2. Centralize control to cover all the devices on one network

So, if you have a router at home, you can set up a DNS filter like NordLayer on a computer on the network. From there, you would password protect the NordLayer dashboard so only you could set the blocking rules and control access for all devices on your network, including Smart TVs and gaming consoles.

If you want to be protected as well, you would put a trusted from or family member in charge of the software's password.

Here, you can see part of the interface in NordLayer for blocking content by category. You can also block by specific URL.

DNS filtering, like NordLayer, lets you block content by category or by a specific website. It also allows you to closely monitor user activity.

Here are some of the categories you can filter out.

This is especially helpful for offices and small businesses, but can work for homes as well, especially large families with lots of devices to keep track of.

While there are other solid programs that can help with single (or a few ) devices like Covenant Eyes and BlockerX, DNS filtering software is probably the only way to deal with a large number of devices at once, especially if it's a small business or some kind of a work environment.

Another good router-level system is called Net Nanny, which is designed more specifically for parents and families.

Here's a quick look at part of the Net Nanny interface:

And here's the main dashboard. You can see that this programmed is designed more for keeping track of kids and teenagers than an office environment.

Both of these programs involve some setup on your end, but their support is really good and they can help you with all of that. For the most part, it's just installing the software on a device that's connected to the router, than you can control everything from that device.

In summary, I'd recommend Net Nanny for families and Nord Layer for small businesses and/or office environments.

Covenant Eyes Software and NordLayer DNS Filtering: Covenant Eyes provides accountability software that covers URLs and images, as well as blocking options, and lots of resources for helping you quit porn.

NordLayer allows you to implement network-wide filtering, and is a much more comprehensive blocking option, with added security measures and more extensive configuration options. It's effective for both homes and businesses.
