The Best Porn Blocking Resources - Complete Reviews and Analysis

We've used this software personally and have also tested and collected information for the purpose of these reviews. Categories include effectiveness, features, ease of use, and blocking category (accountability, brain re-wiring, blocking, filtering, etc.).

1. NordLayer DNS Filtering

The NordLayer DNS service is a really sophisticated filtering system that blocks adult websites very thoroughly, but also gives you a more comprehensive and effective set of tools to work with. For one thing, you can implement it network wide, for either homes or businesses, meaning every device is covered.

This is why it's one of the better blockers and filters to use for business environments, or any time you have a bunch of devices to cover on one network.

Another benefit is that pricing is really reasonable, and comparable to software solutions like Covenant Eyes.

Here are a few places where a DNS filtering system would be a good fit:

  1. Business environments (all sizes)
  2. Homes that need to cover multiple devices
  3. Router-level blocking
  4. Those wanting a VPN and additional security measures

As you can see, NordLayer gives you a lot of tools for what you pay. Here are a few things that are included with just the basic plan.

  1. VPN that's always running
  2. AES encryption
  3. Kill Switch
  4. Multi-Factor Authentication

And there's more with the advanced NordLayer plans. Basically, it protects all your devices from intrusion, malicious websites/actors, and essentially all adult content. So if you have questions about DNS filtering in general, or NordLayer specifically, hit the comments section below and I'll do my best to help out.

Covenant Eyes is built on the accountability software porn prevention method of screen and text monitoring. Their software collects this information and then shares it with pre-established accountability partners that can review your web activity.

It's our number one recommendation, especially for those just getting started on their porn detox.

You'll select an accountability partner (or partners) whom you trust and will then review these reports.

Covenant Eyes also has versions that filter and block, in addition to providing accountability as their base method of prevention.

How to Install Covenant Eyes on Mobile Devivces

There are two different ways to use Covenant Eyes, depending on the device in question. For iPhones and iPads, you'll go to the app store and download the Covenant Eyes browser onto your phone.

Once downloaded, you'll log into the browser with your account.

Now, since the CE browser can't track other browsers on your phone. You'll need to use Screen Time restrictions in settings to disable the following:

    1. Safari Browser
    2. App Store (so you can't download additional browsers)
Once you have the Covenant Eyes browser installed, disable the Safari browser and App Store through Screen Time which is in Content & Privacy Restrictions.

Once you have the Covenant Eyes browser installed, disable the Safari browser and App Store through Screen Time which is in Content & Privacy Restrictions.

Get someone you trust, like a spouse or a friend, to set the passcode so that you don't know it. If you ever need the passcode, that person can unlock it for you.

The idea is to set things up so you can only use the CE browser, which is monitored through a VPN connection.

This process is similar if you're using a device running Android.

How to Install Covenant Eyes on a Desktop

On the desktop, it's a lot easier and more straightforward.

The desktop version of the app monitors everything on a Mac or PC, so you can still use whatever browser you want. To get started, you'll need to log in to your Covenant Eyes account on a web browser.

To download the desktop app, first log in to your account on a browser of your choosing.

To download the desktop app, first log in to your account on a browser of your choosing.

From there, click on Downloads from the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.

Click the Downloads menu option

Click the Downloads menu option

From there, you'll have all the devices with a download available. We've already talked about mobile options, so in this example we'd be looking at Mac or Windows.

Once you download the software the installation is pretty straightforward, just like any other program you would download onto your computer.

Once you go through that process, you should see the little "Eye" logo in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, on the taskbar.

Once installed you should see the CE icon here on your taskbar.

Once installed you should see the CE icon here on your taskbar.

When that's done, you're good to go. You're now ready to use your computer safely, with total accountability.

Can't I just uninstall the software?

In order to uninstall Covenant Eyes on a desktop or laptop computer, you need to generate a code from your account. When that code is generated, your accountability partner(s) will be notified immediately that you generated the code and will likely check in on you

That said:

Sometimes there are legitimate reasons to uninstall CE, perhaps for troubleshooting or a computer changing hands.

But that's something you'll need to communicate to your accountability partner(s).

In other words, you can't just uninstall the software without someone knowing.

Does it also work for iPads and Tablets?

Covenant Eyes works for iPads and tablets running Android. You just need to go through the process outlined above to set it up and block existing browsers.

Does it work for Kindle?

Covenant Eyes does not currently have an app for Kindle.

What about gaming systems like XBOx and playstation?

There is currently no Covenant Eyes app for XBOX or PlayStation. There is also no simple way to disable the default browsers on these devices

3. Porn Blocker Plus - Best for Safari Mobile Browser

  1. Cheaper than Covenant Eyes
  2. Designed specifically for Safari
  3. Has blocking of millions of sites already built in
  4. Block by specific website, URL, or keyword
  5. iPhone-only

For those still wanting to use Safari on their phone, we'd recommend an app called Porn Blocker Plus.

Instead of accountability software, this is an app that installs on your phone and simply blocks websites from access on Safari. On its own, the app blocks millions of porn sites, but you can also block by specific URLs and/or keywords.

It basically loads filters into Safari once you first launch the app.

How much does Porn Blocker Plus cost?

Porn Block Plus is free to download, but does not let you activate without paying.

The cost is $69.99 per year or about $5.83 per week, and you can cancel any time.

Porn Blocker Plus doesn't let you get going without a paid account.

Porn Blocker Plus doesn't let you get going without a paid account.

This is cheaper than Covenant Eyes, but it doesn't do quite as much and you can't use it on a desktop computer or Android.

It's a great option for those who only use and iPhone and want specifically to deal with Safari.

What about the App Store?

Again, I would recommend disabling your app store with the passcode option in the Restrictions settings. See the above info on Covenant Eyes mobile if you need help doing that. The process is the same.

Can't I just delete the app?

There's an option in the Restrictions section of your iPhone to prevent the deletion of apps, just the same as the installation of apps. You can check that option too before getting your passcode set up.

4. BlockerX: Best for brain re-wiring and "all of the above" solutions

BlockerX Home Page
  1. More comprehensive solution
  2. Includes blocking, buddy system, uninstall prevention, and multiple platform compatibility
  3. Panic switch
  4. Streak tracking
  5. Help with brain re-wiring
  6. Free (lite) version available
  7. Lifetime membership option available

BlockerX is one of the more comprehensive porn blocking solutions, and is sort of what we'd call a jack-of-all-trades in this category.

You'll have access to a type of accountability that helps combat the urge to to view pornography on multiple fronts, including a reporting system that gets sent to your buddy, just like in Covenant Eyes.

It also lets you block all major (and most smaller) porn sites in one click.

Free Version

One of the unique features of BlockerX is that they offer a lite version of their app that includes the website blocking.

  1. Educational resources
  2. Website blocking
  3. Access to the BlockerX community

Paid Version

In the paid version you'll have access to all of the features we've already mentioned:

  1. Blocker
  2. Accountability (buddy)
  3. Panic switch
  4. Uninstall control
  5. Daily report to buddy

Feature breakdown for the BlockerX free and paid versions.

How much does a BlockerX membership cost?

The BlockerX pricing system is interesting. A one-year membership is Porn sessions eliminated/year

This seems normal enough.

But then they have a lifetime membership option that's only Porn sessions eliminated/year.

To me it seems pretty clear that the lifetime membership is a far better value.

Is it good for teenagers?

The BlockerX app is definitely a good fit for teenagers as it helps to give you more tools (ideal for a parent) to block content and make changes. You can set it up for you to be the buddy, which gives you control over the uninstall process as well.

For kids though, we'd first recommend Net Nanny which you can read about in the next section.

What about the family computer?

If you have a family computer, like we do in our household, BlockerX is a good option since it sends report daily. This becomes more important as your kids get older, and the BlockerX has different versions that can cover multiple formats including desktops and phones.

5. Net Nanny: Best porn blocker for kids and teens

  1. Laser-focused on parents and kids
  2. Track location of kids and devices
  3. Manage screen time
  4. Filters and blocks
  5. Very thorough parent dashboard
  6. Great yearly price points

Net Nanny is entirely focused on providing tools for parents to manage their kids online experience. It's very comprehensive and allows a parent total and complete control over the devices that each kid is using.

Here are some of the things you can do from the Net Nanny dashboard:

  1. Block and filter access to websites
  2. Track location (by device)
  3. Limit device usage by time
  4. Manage YouTube viewing
  5. Turn off internet access

And honestly, this is just the basics. Net Nanny is very detailed. They even have an activity feed that shows events and sites visited in real time.

When we tested the dashboard it was very easy to use. Though keep in mind we only tried one device. One of the most helpful things was having the location of that device on the map.

For a parent, it could probably get a little obsessive - like, you're just watching and waiting for something questionable to pop up.

My advice would be to not necessarily monitor the dashboard all the time.

Unless you're trying to locate a child or teen, check on it once or twice a day.

Otherwise you'll drive yourself crazy.

Here's a picture of the dashboard:

The Net Nanny dashboard gives you 100% control over you kid's devices.

The Net Nanny dashboard gives you 100% control over you kid's devices.

The Context of Net Nanny

Keep in mind, Net Nanny is a lot more advanced than a traditional porn filter or accountability tool and is intended for families.

It's probably overkill for helping just one person.

That said, a spouse or friend could certainly use this software to help keep another adult accountable. But in my view it would be way more than what is needed, especially if you're only dealing with one or two devices.

This is a porn blocker designed specifically for families, and larger families at that.

To test it, we only used two devices:

  1.  iPhone
  2. Desktop computer running Windows

In that limited environment, it felt like overkill. But we're also adults, so that could have been part of why we felt like it was more than needed.

But my main takeaway here is that it's the larger families with 3+ kids and 10+ devices that are going to get the most value out of this software. It basically creates a hub for you to manage everything, without getting bogged down and chasing around individual devices.

My Family's Situation

In our family we have six kids, none of which are 10 years old yet (at the time of publishing this page), and the devices are already starting to pile up.

After testing Net Nanny, that's going to be our go-to solution as the kids get older.

How much does Net Nanny cost?

Net Nanny saves you some money by limited the number of devices for each pricing tier. For example, five devices only costs $54.99 per year.

A 20 device plan ramps up to $54.99 per year, which is still a really decent value, considering the other options on this list are all $100 or more per year (with exception of the weird BlockerX lifetime option).

Net Nanny's pricing structure as of January 2023.

Net Nanny's pricing structure as of January 2023.

For large families and multiple devices, the value that Net Nanny gives you is really solid.

No complaints here.

Why You Need a Porn Blocker

Particularly for males, porn is a growing concern due to the potential impacts it can have on mental and overall health.

If you don't want to be constantly tempted by pornography and you use a smartphone or a computer often, getting some kind of a porn blocker is going to be crucial to avoid an addiction to this material.

Again, men are more susceptible to this, but it can be an issue for women as well.

To summarize, these are the main reasons to use a porn blocker:

  1. To protect you from the major porn sites: Even if you only remove the major porn sites, that's a huge piece of the puzzle. Almost all porn blockers clear these by default.
  2. To reduce the temptation to look for porn in the first place: Porn blockers greatly increase the complexity to get to pornography, if not eliminate it all together. This will zap a lot of the temptation when you're using the internet on any device.
  3. It helps you focus when online: Particularly for those who work with computers, having porn "off the table", so to speak, can help you concentrate and avoid lengthy detours from your work.
  4. To give you more control over your internet and content viewing: Most porn blockers allow you to add URLs and keywords to block in addition to the sites that are blocked by default. This can include search engines, image sites, or whatever else gets you into porn trouble.
  5. Helps spouses and family members trust you: Having the diligence to install a porn blocker shows those who love you that you're make a serious effort to stay clean online. It will be particularly meaningful to a spouse or significant other.

Porn blockers (and accountability software) are not perfect and they can't solve the entire problem, but they are a major step in the process to get clean online.

How to Choose the Best Porn Blocking Software for Your Situation

We've covered a lot of the factors that can and should impact the porn blocking software you choose to use. A lot of this depends on how you want to attack the problem, but it also depends on the devices you use and several other factors.

Use this list to determine the best way to make the decision for your situation.

  1. Your devices: We've seen porn blockers that target specific browsers like Safari, or multiple platforms/devices. If you use a desktop computer and phone, that could require a different solution than using a phone only, which many people do these days.
  2. Your family structure: Singles will approach porn blockers differently than families, perhaps with a lot of kids and/or teenagers in the house
  3. Your budget: Different blockers are priced differently which should be taken into consideration when making your decision
  4. Your preferred method: You have different methods of dealing with pornography, primarily accountability software, straight blockers, filters, or managed brain re-wiring apps. Your preferred method is up to you and is another variable to consider.
  5. The degree of your struggle with or addiction to pornography: Those who use porn more often or are more severely addicted will need to take more aggressive steps to mitigate more use, which might involve combining some of the aforementioned methods.

These variables should all be kept in your mind. Don't overthink it, but also be careful not to overlook things that could be legitimately helpful. Go with the solutions that's best for you.

Research Methods and Process: What do we base recommendations on?

There are a lot of porn blockers on the market, and likely more to be developed in the years to come. We've covered the most popular that are currently available and settled on the top four.

However, there are a variety of factors we analyzed and considered to decide which ones to include.

At the front of these recommendations is personal use by us, which we make sure and do before making a call.

Here's a comprehensive list of the factors involved when reviewing the software in this list.

Ease of use

How easy is the software to use and set up?

This is an important factor since not everyone who needs anti-porn software is necessarily going to be very tech savvy. Porn blockers need to greatly simplify the process and make it user friendly.

For example, the dashboard in Net Nanny does a great job of this.

So does the accountability partner addition section in Covenant Eyes.

How much does it impact general browsing and internet use?

The best porn blocking software shouldn't make general browsing of the internet or device use difficult.

We need these things to function, so anti-porn software needs to walk a fine line between preventing access to explicit content, and leaving non-explicit functionality available and easy to use.

All of the software in this list does a good job of that.

And for the most part, the aggression of blocking can be dialed up or down and then set so the user can't tweak it without permission.

This our next category.

Does it limit the user's ability to "disarm"?

A porn blocker doesn't do much good if the device user can just disable it whenever they want.

We look for solutions that are as close as possible to being bulletproof.

The simplest and most effective way to implement this is with some kind of password or passcode that can be handled by a spouse, family member, or friend, which is often referred to as the "buddy system."

These porn blocking apps have this feature, either by supporting their own passcode, like the desktop version of CE, or by utilizing things like Restrictions and Screen Time on the iPhone.

This is a huge part of our analysis, as we test whether or not we can disable the software by alternative means or without the permission of a buddy.

The porn blocking software in this list is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to disable.

Device comprehension

While we certainly don't exclude single device solutions (we have one in this list), we look for apps with device comprehension, meaning the variety of devices it supports.

Generally, we like to see solutions that can handle:

  1. Multiple devices (phones, tablets, desktop)
  2. Multiple operating systems (Windows, Mac, etc.)

Price and Value

Most porn blockers and internet filters have a similar price point, and run on a monthly or yearly membership payment system.

There are a few one-time options, but in most cases we're looking at monthly or yearly cost.

The lower the price, the better the value.

This is a small, but still important factor in our analysis.

What is the best porn blocking software overall?

Since Covenant Eyes has blocking, filtering, and accountability functionality, we typically recommend it first. Though it depends on your situation and what kind of solution you want.

We think Covenant Eyes will be the best option for the largest number of people.

This is also because CE is good with cross device and cross operating system functionality.

You can try out Covenant Eyes here:

Does porn blocking or accountability software impact the speed of my internet or computer?

Anti-porn solutions typically have a very small impact on internet speed and computer functionality.

This is the CPU and Memory usage of my computer running Covenant Eyes and two other applications:

For the most part my CPU usage stayed at 2%, which is extremely low. Those two spikes are where I opened a third program, but after the program loaded it went right back down.

Memory (RAM) stayed at 24%. These numbers are about the same to my non-Covenant Eyes test.

Here is the result of a speed test I ran:

This is lightning fast for my area. I have a Glo Fiber connection at home and this is pretty typical.

We ran similar tests on the other software with the same experience. Getting speed numbers on the phone is trickier, but we didn't experience performance issues there either.

I have nothing to complain about here.

Are porn blockers impossible to disable?

When built and set up the right way, it is very difficult to hack your way through a porn blocker or filter.

The key is that someone else be administrating it.

If you set it up that way, you'll usually have to crack some kind of password or pass code, which is next to impossible for the average, or even advanced, computer user.

That said, we can never say that they are 100% impenetrable. In the computer world, that's never totally the case with anything.

Can porn blockers accidently block non-explicit sites or content?

Anti-porn software has gotten very adept at identifying explicit content and focusing on disabling or blocking it.

As a result it's more and more rare for them to accidently block normal websites without adult content.

If that's the case, you're likely dealing with a lower quality solution.

Summary

In conclusion, we would absolutely recommend getting some form of filtering and porn blocking software on all your devices. It's not going to solve everything, but it's a major step in your fight against pornography.
